Hippos, Leopards, Baboons, and Giraffes

We had it all planned out. We were going to spend the evening on the mokoro, a canoe, being paddled down the river seeing the wildlife.

The wildlife had other plans.

When we arrived at the river, our tracker wanted to wait a few minutes before heading in. It was a good thing because there was a herd of hippos congregating in the river, just below the surface of the water. We sat and watched them a for a long time, while our guides told us terrifying real-life stories of people they'd known who had been killed by hippos.

It's interesting to realize that not only is our anthropomorphized version of hippos is not just absurd, it can kill you. You wouldn't think this cute little guy could outswim, outrun, and basically bite you in half, would you?

Well, he can!

So, we abandoned the makoros and went in search of the lions again.

On the way, we came across a troop of really angry baboons. They were hanging out in the trees, hollering at something.

Turns out, they were hollering at this guy. A very lazy leopard who was napping in the area. The baboons were keeping him awake, apparently, so he eventually took off. We followed him for a while. We didn't find the lions, but we did take time for a quick photo op with our guide, BT and KB.

On the way home, we saw beautiful giraffes and another amazing sunset.
