First Stop: Franschhoek

Sunday, 5 August; Franschhoek Country House and Villas

We've arrived! I slept about 6 hours on the flight and am still feeling a bit snoozy. Our first stop is the town of Franschhoek (Afrikaans for "French Corner" a throwback to when the French colonized parts of South Africa). This area, about an hour from Capetown, is known as the Winelands which makes a lot of sense because of all the vineyards. Duh.

I have to admit I had this tiny fear that when we arrived in Africa there wouldn't be a vacation. That we will have fallen for an elaborate and very expensive scam and that we'd be spending two weeks at the Capetown Holiday Inn. But, as promised, there was a driver there at the airport to hurry us off to our hotel. Yea!

The driver was very friendly and he pointed out the sights (such as they were) as he drove, only occasionally swerving into oncoming traffic. What's already blowing my mind about this place is that the area we were in is fairly metropolitan, kind of like Columbus, Ohio. Then, suddenly, zebras. Just like that. Zebras. Go figure.Anne outside the Villas.

It's winter here, so it's actually a little bit cold. The FCH is very cozy, they have working fireplaces in all of the common areas and big comfy sofas that are just perfect for SSR.* We arrived early and our room wasn't ready yet. I think the staff had visions of us passing out in the lounge so they gave us a temporary room to use to rest a while. Good call.
It was so quiet. Probably because we were the only guests.

As the Brits say, there's the water feature.

Lavendar was everywhere- it smelled like a nap.

Lemons. Another motif.
