Photos: Rock Gardens

One of my favorite things about Japan are the many rock gardens that are hidden throughout the country. Sometimes you can find them within the confines of temples and shrines, sometimes they are displayed in someone's front yard. When I first saw one, I thought it seemed cold and spare. But on my most recent trip to Kyoto, I had the chance to just sit quietly and take it all in. I read something about how the designers used "borrowed scenery" to create the backdrop for their gardens. Like many things Japanese, each detailed is planned, down to the patterns of the rocks.
